Music Video Genres

There are a variety of music genres within the music industry. All these different genres come associated with different styles of music videos. Naturally, some genres of music will stand out more or be more popular than others, therefore some genres will have music videos and some will not.


Some of the most popular music video genres, according to IFPI's latest Consumer Music Report include; Pop, Rock, EDM, House, Hip-Hop, Rap, and Trap. This amongst the consumption of music in 18 countries.

Pop

Pop is one of the most popular music genres today and makes up 64% of all consumed music. Pop music videos most commonly consist of colourful and abstract settings and large groups of people as they tend to be quite upbeat, however that is the majority, and it really depends on the type of music video, whether its performance, narrative or conceptual. It also depends on the artists and directors choice of what they want to convey through the music video.

Rock

Rock is the second most popular after pop with it being consumed by 57% of all people. Rock music tends to revolve around the co-operation of the band in order to create the song, therefore majority of rock music videos tend to be performance videos. These will either consist of acted performances in a studio or recording of a live performance, however this isn't always the case.

Dance/Electronic/House

EDM makes up 32% of all consumed music, however its value may seem small, it is slowly rising and becoming very popular. EDM music completely depends on the artists and producers when creating the song and what it is going to be, therefore music videos tend to completely vary when it comes to this genre of music. They can be narrative, performance or conceptual.

Hip-Hop/Rap/Trap

Along with EDM, these genres of music are also slowly growing and becoming very popular, making up 26% of all consumed music. Just like the other genres, this also depends on the artists and producers ideas and what they want to convey through the music video. Stereotypically, these genre of song tend to convey drugs, money and violence, so some songs of these genre may tend to stick to this theme, however this isn't always the case, and may choose to convey something else.
