Research - Inspiration/Favourites

Inspiration

I find a lot of interest in all types of music videos, specifically if they have something quite unique to them or if they really exacerbate the type of music video that is trying to be conveyed, whether if be narrative or conceptual.

Marshmello - Alone & Avicii - Wake Me Up

Two of my personal favourite music videos is 'Alone' by Marshmello and 'Wake Me Up' by Avicii. These are both narrative and moderate performance videos, but stick more to the narrative aspect.

'Alone' conveys a highschool boy, acted by Marshmello, who is bullied at school due to him being different because he wears a mask, but that all changes when people realise his groundbreaking talents as a DJ.

'Wake Me Up' by Avicii tells the story of two sisters who are treated differently because they look different to the rest of the town they live in, in that they are cleaner, prettier and dress nicer than everyone in the town. Both music videos conclude on the performance of the actual song live by both artists.

Marshmello - Happier

Happier by Marshmello has a narrative and performance music video, however of the 2 I personally really enjoy the performance video because it's quite unique and different. It uses very simple pastel colours and settings, joint with very neat transitions, it creates a very aesthetically appealing and enjoyable video.

Of the three types of music videos, narrative, performance and conceptual, I believe that narrative is the most effective way of conveying the song and meaning behind the lyrics of it. In that the audience can relate to the lyrics and story of the song and therefore the character being played in the music video. The emotional connection that some narrative videos can create between audiences or people is very special and can be quite powerful, hence I think that narrative is the best way to convey the meaning behind a song, and to achieve the best possible reaction.

Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved

With 'Someone You Loved' I feel more inspired by the lyrics than the music video. The lyrics play an extremely vital role in moving the audience with emotion and creating a certain atmosphere about the song and what its trying to convey to the audience. With this song, and many songs alike, many people can relate to the lyrics and find a lot of value from it and can be emotionally moved by it that some songs can't do. These kinds of lyrics joint by a narrative video really complement each other and create an astonishing music video.
