Research - Narrative Concept

Narrative Concept

Our idea for our music video is to focus on a narrative theme, this way we could be quite free with our initial ideas and really focus on creating as much emotion as possible through the depiction of our images paired with the music.

To prepare for this, we looked at general codes and conventions of narrative music videos.

Linear and Fragmented

There are two types of narrative music video, linear and fragmented. Linear narratives focus on a conventional storyline structure, including a beginning, middle and end, whilst fragmented narratives are more displaced and parted, but still convey the process of a story to the audience.

Linear Narrative Example

Representation

Generally, narratives tend to focus on certain themes that bring out certain emotions amongst an audience. These can be themes such as; love, friendship, family and many more that focus on the idea of connection and relationships. This is because it's not too difficult to construct a storyline behind these ideas because they are very relatable, and therefore can influence an audience more effectively, as people would have experienced them before.

The way this is created through composition is completely various and is always changing between directors and artists, but it completely depends on what is trying to be conveyed to the audience, whether its aiming to create a positive, informative or negative atmosphere.
